1962 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 3.8 Roadster

The Jaguar E-Type (XKE for the US market) is celebrating its sixtieth birthday this year; it remains one of the purest car designs of all time, a sublime combination of flowing lines and curves that not only look sensational but when endowed with the glorious Jaguar straight-six engine mean the E-Type is just as inspiring to drive.

The example we have here was built in January 1962 and dispatched a month later for export to the USA; originally painted silver blue and with a red interior, the first owner was a Mr. R A Finshing according to the Jaguar Heritage Trust trace certificate. We don’t yet know any of the subsequent ownership history, but the car must have been well cared for because it still retains its original and matching chassis / engine block / cylinder head and body numbers.

In much more recent years it had made its way back to Europe where it is understood to have been discovered by an Italian collector; he entrusted the E-Type to Jaguar specialists The Coventry Garage di Zanardi Mauro in Nogara, northern Italy (between Venice and Milan) for a comprehensive and full restoration wherein every item was either meticulously restored or replaced to its original and correct 1962 factory specification. At the same time the E-Type was repainted into Opalescent Silver Grey and trimmed with red leather and a black soft top, a fabulous color combination. The standard and detail of the panel fit and finish is quite superb and flawless all round. With disc brakes and fitted with 15 inch triple-laced chrome wire wheels matched to Vredenstein Sprint Classic 185 HR 15 tyres, the whole combination is delectable and the Roadster understandably receives full admiration on every outing.
