1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe

There are but a few classic cars which are so instantly recognizable as that of a ‘Gullwing’ Mercedes, or to be more precise, Mercedes-Benz 300SL Coupé.

If you were fortunate enough to be able to afford such a machine when they were new, then your factory invoice would be presented all neatly typed out on Daimler ˙ Benz Aktiengesellschaft Stuttgart-Untertürkheim letterhead crisp parchment paper with the fabulous sentence We have delivered to you: followed by the details pertaining to your motor car:

    1 MERCEDES-BENZ Typ 300 SL Coupé.

The Gullwing was indeed a sensation, even though it had originally only been intended as a racing machine for Mercedes to compete with at the highest level. When the US importer Hoffman put in a giant order for some 900+ cars he effectively put the Gullwing on its way to three-pointed stardom and the car became the sensation it still is.

This example was delivered new on 20 August 1956 to Mercedes-Benz Canada finished originally in Red (DB534) and with a Green cloth (L2) interior.

Amazingly the Gullwing was to stay in the same family ownership of a Toronto family from 1957 – 2006 during which 43-year sojourn it had travelled a mere 56,000 miles. The next owner realized he had found a remarkably solid car but also one that needed restoring, and thus he entrusted the project to RM Auto Restorations in Canada to execute a full body-off-frame restoration, at which time he chose to repaint the car into its current color scheme of gloss black (DB40) with a red leather interior. Naturally, all the running gear, main mechanical components, and engine/gearbox were also inspected and rebuilt as needed. New belly pans were also made for the underside. The Gullwing was to change ownership again, being part of Peter Fodor’s lovely collection in Los Angeles and subsequently then selling to a private collector in Newport Beach, California and who fitted the current Rudge-style wheels to the car. Morris & Welford handled the sale from Newport Beach to the present owner who has enjoyed the Gullwing immensely, and who also had engine and other mechanical work undertaken (invoices for which are on file) but who, in his own words, prefers to drive his equally attractive 300SL Roadster.

We are immensely privileged to be offering ‘6500214’ again for sale, a matching numbered Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe in magnificent condition.
